£4m newspaper centre is officially opened

A new £4m newspaper centre for the Guernsey Press and Star has been officially opened.

A plaque was unveiled in front of 200 guests and members of the board of parent company the Claverley Group, by Bailiff Geoffrey Rowland.

The office was converted after Guernsey Press' book printing and commercial print businesses were closed, leaving empty building space.

The state-of-the-art building is now also home to staff of the Press and Star's sister weekly paper, the Guernsey Globe, glossy magazine Guernsey Now, tourist magazine The Visitor and website thisisguernsey.com.

After the unveiling of the plaque guests were taken on guided tours of the new building and enjoyed a special edition 'Hop off the Press' real ale.

Claverley Group director Alan Graham said: "We are very proud to have been able to convert an industrial building which already existed into superior offices.

"The commitment has been made and has been honoured and we look forward to producing better and better papers."

Guernsey Press Company managing director Paul Carter added: "It has been a difficult, unique, and at times frustrating but rewarding project.

"Choosing to convert redundant space in an old book-printing and finishing shed into a high-tech bespoke publishing centre was a significant change.

"This development has allowed us to gather all our skill and resources into one area and improve workflow, efficiencies and communication.

"We have also planned in sufficient expansion space to allow us to continue to grow within the structure which future-proofs the business in the event of any new developments, product launches or brand extensions."
