Scottish journalist and broadcaster Charles Fletcher is the new chair of media ethics charity, The MediaWise Trust.
MediaWise is best known for providing free, confidential advice to people with complaints about the print and broadcast media.
Charles has 20 years experience of local, national and international newspaper, television and radio production and management.
He is the author of a set of guidelines for journalists that has evolved into a series of handbooks on media ethics in seven languages.
He told the group’s annual meeting: “I know MediaWise has made a considerable difference, for the better, to the lives of many people in the UK and overseas.
“The core strategy of MediaWise – for better journalism – is something that everyone in the industry must value and support.
“We have influenced the new Ofcom code, and the work of the Press Complaints Commission – which we have often criticised for being weak.
“During my first week in office I shall be meeting with both regulators, to assure them that we shall continue to build on past good relationships with them in our efforts to assist those with genuine complaints about print and broadcast journalism. Like all good friends, we’ll have the courage to tell them when we believe they are wrong.
“I’m proud to be part of the MediaWise team. A team that is determined to promote ethical journalism in Britain and around the world.”
Charles was awarded the MBE by the Queen in the Birthday Honours List of 2004 for his contribution to extending democracy through the development of the media. He is a regular guest on radio programmes discussing media and politics; and is also an after-dinner speaker.
