Post cartoonist becomes the story in TV documentary

A press cartoonist whose career has seen off ten editors and six prime ministers has been making the headlines himself.

Bert Hackett, of The Birmingham Post, has had his career celebrated on regional television news magazine Central News.

The 72-year-old has been drawing inspiration from the Post’s own headlines for his work for the past 40 years, originally setting up in 1966 with business partner Gavin Gallagher.

He has since drawn more than 11,000 cartoons and illustrations - after training at art college and starting his career at the Manchester Evening News as a graphic illustrator.

He told viewers: "We did a lot of work for the Birmingham Post and Mail, and I was there virtually every day, and one day I was asked to do cartoons.

"Initially Gavin and I were going to share the job, but after ten years I was doing it on my own, but despite resisting the job I found I really enjoyed doing political cartoons.”

Fiona Alexander, editor of The Birmingham Post, said: "Bert has the ability to be humorous and controversial at the same time whether it's a local or national issue.

"I do believe he is the best of his kind on a regional or national paper."
