A new book providing a valuable insight into the skills and knowledge required to work in the print and publishing industries has hit book stores.

Richard Keeble, professor of journalism at the University of Lincoln, edited Print Journalism: A Critical Overview and contributed a chapter of his own.

He provided a chapter on ethics titled: ‘Is Virtuous Journalism Possible? A Critical Overview of Ethical Dilemmas’.

Former Lincolnshire Echo and Western Daily Press man Richard Orange, now a freelance journalist and senior lecturer in journalism at Lincoln, contributed two chapters on reporting courts and politics.

Prof Keeble said: "Editing this chunky text proved an enormous challenge. Its 25 chapters over 347 pages draw together contributions from 14 top journalism academics from universities around the country.

"It covers a vast range of topics including sourcing the news, interviewing, sub-editing, feature writing and online journalism, so it should be popular with both students and teachers."

In addition to the chapters looking at practical skills, the book also covers the history of magazines and newspapers, the structure of the print industry, news values, copyright and journalism education in the UK.

Publisher Routledge, is also publishing the fourth edition of Richard Keeble's 'The Newspapers Handbook' which has proved a hit with journalism students and teachers since the first edition came out in 1994.

He said: "I guess its success is partly due to the fact that it's a rather unusual textbook.

"Most attempt to achieve some kind of objective impartiality. In contrast, in my handbook I'm not afraid to be critical and opinionated while at the same time rigorous and detailed throughout."
