New editor hopes to boost circulation at Newmarket

Philip Minett is to become editor of the Newmarket Journal.

Currently editor of the Suffolk Free Press in Sudbury, he will take up his new post in September.

Both titles are published by Anglia Newspapers, part of Johnston Press.

Philip, (45), has previously worked for the Press Association, the Cambridge Evening News and the Cambs Times.

During his three years at the Suffolk Free Press has seen circulation of the title rise by five per cent to around 10,500.

And he will now put his experience to good use in Newmarket, where the Journal has seen its circulation begin to fall.

Philip said: "The paper needs a lift to turn a slight downturn into an upturn.

"We've run three fundraising campaigns in the three years I've been here which brought different members of the community together, and I'll be looking to come up with something similar in Newmarket.

"It's an area I'm familiar with - I covered Newmarket while I worked in Cambridge and I live in Ely which is closer to Newmarket than Sudbury."

  • The Newmarket Journal has an average weekly circulation of 11,766 (ABC July - Dec 2004).
