Strike dates set for London weekly newspaper

Journalists are set to strike at the South London Guardian.

Members of the National Union of Journalists voted for the action, which is in protest at pay.

The strikes dates are set for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday July 25, 26 and 27.

An original pay offer of nothing and a revised offer of three per cent were both rejected and talks at conciliation service ACAS failed to find a solution.

The ten-edition Newsquest title has offices in Morden and Croydon and 41 of the 48 editorial staff are thought to be NUJ members.

The company denies there was a nought per cent pay offer and says three per cent was always on the table.

  • A secret ballot at Sheffield Newspapers, which publishes the Sheffield Star and weekly Sheffield Telegraph, resulted in a vote by the NUJ in favour of strike action, and members have asked the management to continue talks. Members claim 12 editorial posts are currently vacant and that this has put pressure on existing staff.
