A well-known West Cumbrian journalist and editor has remembered three local charities in his will.

Stan Hornsby, who died earlier this year, had enjoyed a 50-year career in local news, and the money has been donated to good causes in his memory.

They are the Cumbria Deaf Association, West Cumbria Hospice at Home and a local charity for the blind.

Stan was chairman of the Whitehaven Deaf Centre and he and his wife Majorie helped raise funds for the building.

He had been dedicated to the cause for many years after his eldest brother John became deaf after a bout of meningitis when he was a baby.

He was also a founder member of the Whitehaven branch of the deaf association and helped to establish West Cumbria's first talking newspaper for the blind.

Stan began his career in 1931 at the North West Evening Mail. He joined Cumbrian Newspapers in 1959 and went on to become deputy editor at Workington, Carlisle and Whitehaven before being made editor of the Times & Star.
