More strike action hits Coventry

A third round of industrial action was today due to be held at Coventry Newspapers in an ongoing protest over pay.

National Union of Journalists members at the Coventry Evening Telegraph, Coventry Citizen, Nuneaton Tribune, Bedworth Echo and Hinckley Times were due to stay away from their desks as part of a two-day stoppage.

Trinity Mirror, owner of the titles, says publication of the newspapers will not be affected.

NUJ members say they are unhappy with the company's basic pay offer of 2.75 per cent with some extras on minimum bandings, and the protest follows earlier action on June 17, 29 and 30.

But Coventry Newspapers has said the company has gone as far as it can go.

A spokesman said: "The company has conducted all negotiations in good faith and has improved its offer several times in order to find a compromise. We have now gone as far as we can go.

"We are disappointed that the NUJ has decided to take further action, but production will not be affected and our newspapers will be published as usual.

"We hope to have all our people back working normally as soon as possible."

  • The action follows months of talks on the NUJ's original pay claim submitted last September. The two sides went to ACAS in April, but failed to reach a resolution.
