Sales boost for Portsmouth team in Trafalgar battle coverage

The News in Portsmouth celebrated the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar by selling 70,000 copies of a glossy magazine and boosting circulation for its newspaper editions this week.

In addition, every reporter and photographer did their duty on Tuesday, the day of the Queen’s visit for a fleet review and sea battle re-enactment.

All editions were brought forward and included photographs of the Queen arriving and aerial shots of the ships, and a late final was produced by 3.30pm, giving full coverage of the fleet review.

The team worked overnight for a breakfast edition with an eight-page wrap-around and the first seven pages of the paper running coverage of the fleet review, a mock naval battle and spectacular firework display.

One of the reporters, Simon Coughlin (right), covered the events from one of the historic ships involved in the re-enactment, dressed in period costume.

The print run increased by an extra 10,000 to 75,000 to meet anticipated demand.

There were also live updates on the paper's website portsmouthtoday.co.uk, and its three new webcams - giving views across the harbour entrance, across the Solent and towards Gunwharf Quays - received 36,000 hits on the day.

Prior to the event, the editorial team produced a special guide ahead of the anniversary of the sea battle that changed the course of history.

The glossy 48-page magazine, which also included details of this week's International Festival of the Sea, sold out of its original print run of 50,000 and printed an additional 20,000 to meet demand.

Deputy editor Mark Acheson said: "We've done glossy guides before and they have proved extremely popular. They really did fly off the shelves.

"It's too early for sales figures but all the evidence is that we’ve done extremely well. Sellers had the breakfast edition and the late extras and some people were buying both papers."
