The Newspaper Society has launched a campaign to promote the regional press for recruitment adverts, after a study revealed that 51 per cent of people look for jobs in their local paper.
The society wants to strengthen its position in a sector that brought in £892m for the regional press last year, a third of its revenue.


Associated Newspapers is to build new print plant near Oxford.
The Daily Mail and General Trust-owned company announced that it is to build a new £80m print plant in Didcot, Oxfordshire, and spend a further £16m to add extra units to its Harmsworth Quays plant in London.


“It is never too early to create a newspaper reader”, according to the organisers of the 6th World Young Reader Conference, where hundreds of participants from around the world will examine successful editorial and marketing strategies aimed at building a newspaper habit among young readers, both in the home and at school.
The conference, organised by the World Association of Newspapers, will be held from September 18 to 21 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.


The BBC is planning to create a virtual college of journalism to move away from "bricks and mortar" training to a more flexible learning programme.
It also announced a doubling of investment in journalism training from £5m to £10m a year by 2008, and the appointment of a director of journalism training.


A column in The Sentinel which saw the reunion of a pair of wartime romantics has led to 86-year-old Rob Wilson-Jones popping the question to 82-year-old Freda Holland after a gap of 66 years.
