Journalists tie the knot after true office romance

An office romance between two journalists at the Plymouth Evening Herald has led to a fairytale wedding.

Feature writer and columnist Mary O'Leary and news editor James Garnett have tied the knot after first meeting in the newsroom five years ago, and although it wasn't a case of love at first sight the pair eventually realised they were made for each other.

The happy couple were married by their friend, the Rev Jon Barrett, at Emmanuel Church in Mannamead, watched by family, friends and Herald colleagues.

Crime reporter Jayne Freer, the bride's best friend, was chief bridesmaid.

A reception was held at Langdon Court Hotel in Down Thomas near Wembury, and guests included the bride's brother John O'Leary, who flew in from his home in Australia to attend her special day, and the Herald's entire editorial staff.

Herald photographer Lucy Duval was the official wedding photographer.

Mary said: "It was a wonderful day.

"Unfortunately it poured with rain but we had such a fantastic time that it didn't matter.

"I don't think James or I stopped smiling all day, and he told me later that I grinned all the way down the aisle."

Mary and James enjoyed a short break in Cornwall after the wedding, and plan to take a honeymoon early next year.

  • The couple met in 2000 when Mary was the Herald's health reporter and James joined the paper as a trainee.

After working together for about a year they became a couple and initially kept their romance a secret from their colleagues - who finally found out when crime reporter Jayne issued a press release to the office via e-mail.
