Evening Express brings yobs story to life with CCTV footage on its website

The Evening Express in Aberdeen brought the issue of anti-social behaviour to life when CCTV footage of yobs terrorising a family outside their home was posted on its website.

Earlier this week the paper told how a terrified family had been driven out of their home by marauding yobs.

In a bid to highlight the issue and make a stand, it decided to publish footage from the family's CCTV camera, showing the yobs in action.

Evening Express deputy editor Damian Bates said: "We had to think carefully as the images are quite traumatic and some of the language is rather coarse, but we felt people needed to see what is going on."

The paper told how youths have thrown rocks at the family's home, broken their living room window and shouted racial abuse at them.

Over three pages it also told how they threatened to kill Brian Leask and attack his 14-year-old stepdaughter.

At the end of the story it signposted readers to the CCTV footage on its website at www.thisisaberdeen.co.uk/yobattacks, and unique visitor numbers to the website that day were up by almost 500, to 2,729.

Damian said: "This is the first time that we've used moving images to enhance our news service and it provided the opportunity to make the best use of the resources available.

"Aberdeen has a high Internet usage and we see the website as complementary to the paper, not a competitor."
