Young readers offered chance to be reporter for a day

The Swindon Evening Advertiser is offering budding reporters the chance to join the newspaper for the day and see their work in print.

As part of Local Newspaper Week, which starts today, it is running a competition to give one lucky reader the chance to see how the paper is produced, from sitting in on the editor's conference to seeing it sold in the town.

It is asking children to produce a news article of no more than 200 words, and the winner will get their story published with their very own byline.

The winner will also be invited to the paper's Victoria Road offices for the day - arriving in style in the Advertiser's vintage coach.

After sitting in on the editor's conference they will see how the designers create pages, before being taken to Oxford to see the newspaper being printed and then travelling back to Swindon in a delivery van to see the paper being sold in the town.

Editor Mark Waldron said: "Being at the forefront of the issues of the day is something that is both challenging and exciting.

"This is a great chance for one of our younger readers to be featured in their favourite local newspaper."

The competition is open to children of primary school age.

Local Newspaper Week runs from May 16 to 22, and this year's theme is Closer to Home.
