Archant replaces London paid-for with a free

Archant is to close its paid-for newspaper, the Camden Chronicle, and replace it with a new free title.

The Camden Gazette is due to hit the streets of London for the first time tomorrow, succeeding Archant London's existing North London Newspapers Camden title, which sells around 1,000 copies a week.

The Gazette will have a distribution of 30,000, with 25,000 copies delivered to homes in the NW1 and NW5 postal districts of London every Wednesday and the rest available from pick-up dispensers at Underground stations and other key points in the area.

Archant London deputy MD Garry Matthews said: "This new launch is the fifth since the formation of the Archant London division last year.

"The Camden Gazette promises to be the brightest and most entertaining newspaper for all those who live and work in the heart of Camden. It is a real community newspaper which will deal with Camden life in a bold, direct and no-nonsense style."

Tony Allcock, group editor of North London Newspapers, said: "We're aiming to make the Camden Gazette the first-choice newspaper for the NW1 and NW5 areas of Camden for both readers and advertisers.

"It will offer the best possible deal in Camden with more Camden news, will be bold, challenging and entertaining in style and will be out earlier in the week than any other local newspapers in Camden."

The Gazette will have news from the Camden area alongside the Arsenal coverage of its sister paper, the Islington Gazette, and all its local sport.

There will also be the popular Go leisure section with star interviews, local what's on and eating out guides and a north London property guide.

  • Archant London now publishes 19 paid-for weekly newspapers and five free titles with a total circulation of 617,000.
