Stuart Robertson has taken charge at the Rossendale Free Press, following the retirement of long-serving editor Adrian Purslow.

Adrian, (61), had been editor at the title, part of the Greater Manchester Weekly Newspaper Group, since 1977.

He said: "It has been a privilege and pleasure to work among and for the people of Rossendale.

"I leave Rossendale Valley with many happy memories and friendships. I am looking forward to my retirement, but I would like to say a personal thank-you to everyone who has contributed to and made the Free Press the success it is today.

"Over the years I have been privileged to work with many reporters who have diligently pursued the right to free speech with a dogged determination.

"We have run many stories which have ultimately been covered by national newspapers, but our readers read it first.

"I can commend Stuart Robertson to everyone in Rossendale. I hand over to a first-class journalist who will work tirelessly for the Valley cause."

Stuart, (29), was previously deputy editor at the Accrington Observer and has worked for GMWN for five years.

He said: "I am delighted to take on the role of editor at the Free Press and I'm looking forward to working with the people of Rossendale.

"I intend to do my utmost to maintain the high standards set by Adrian and I wish him all the best in his retirement."
