A new morning newspaper for Belfast which is due to launch next month will reflect the "real issues of the 21st century, not the 17th century", according to its editor.

The Daily View will hit news stands in the Greater Belfast area for the first time on April 4, published by Local Press Ltd, owners of the News Letter.

The news group, which was formed by venture capital company 3i following its purchase of the News Letter and Derry Journal group of newspapers from Trinity Mirror last year, will also launch a new weekly paper in the same week.

Based in Coleraine, The Journal will be an extension of the established Derry Journal brand.

With a staff of 21, the Daily View is being edited by Greg Harkin, former editor of the Daily Mirror in Northern Ireland, and will abstain from sectarian politics.

It will be published Monday to Friday in a compact format and will be aimed at a mid-market family audience.

Greg said: "We want to give people a newspaper covering issues that mean something to them across all sections of the community.

"News of a vibrant and confident city, social issues, lifestyle and social affairs, business and new business development, features and focuses on people who are creating a better city and country to live in, combined with national and international news, comprehensive sport and showbiz."
