Post pays for new nursery in tsunami-hit Sri Lanka

A new nursery school is set to open its doors to children in tsunami-devastated Sri Lanka, thanks to the Bristol Evening Post.

The newspaper donated £2,500 to Bristol-based charity SHIVA to build a nursery in Ampara - one of the worst-affected areas of the country - and it is hoped that it will help return some normality to the lives of children there.

The charity is building at least 20 new nursery schools in the region, each costing an initial £2,500, and the Post agreed to fund one - and pay a further £60 a month to maintain it for its first year.

Now the school is ready to open to 40 children who will attend classes there, provided with uniforms with the Evening Post logo.

Evening Post managing editor Rob Stokes said: "Like everyone else, we wanted to do something to help following the tsunami disaster.

"This is our way of showing that we care and in a small way helping to rebuild a community."
