Borrell to leave Trinity Mirror

Birmingham Evening Mail editor Roger Borrell is to leave Trinity Mirror.

Currently also Midlands editor-in-chief, Roger's departure is part of a strategic review led by new regional managing director John Bills, and as a result his role has been made redundant.

The changes also see Liverpool Echo editor Mark Dickinson leave his post to take on a newly-created role of editorial director for the Midlands business, where he will play a prominent role in the regional review.

He said: "I am very excited about the challenge ahead.

"There's a great team of people in the Midlands and I'm looking forward to working with them."

He is also currently regional editor-in-chief of Trinity Mirror's business in the North West. The role of editorial director Neil Benson has been extended to take on that part of Mark's old job.

In addition to his existing duties, Neil takes special responsibility for editorial development in the North West, including leadership of a major newsroom project which will see new technology introduced.

Neil said: "Our North West business is extremely strong and I'm thrilled at the prospect of working with the team there.

"Over the past four years, our titles have made great strides in working together editorially and I'm delighted that aspect of my role will continue."

One of his first tasks will also be to appoint a new editor at the Liverpool Echo.

The moves follow the arrival of new regionals managing director Georgina Harvey in February.

She said: "These moves strengthen the editorial focus at two of our largest businesses at a time of exciting development for Trinity Mirror's Regionals division."

  • John Bills became regional MD in December. The company anounced the change just a week after a vote of no confidence in the old MD Alistair Nee, and editor-in-chief Roger Borrell, was passed by National Union of Journalists members at the Post & Mail.
