That would lead to a letter from Mr A
Pedant, MA (Oxon), a retired parish
council magazine editor, saying: "One
tires of declining standards in local
newspapers. The placement of 'the noun
'German' in front of 'Afrika Korps' by
the Evening Herald sub-editor creates a
tautology, as the phrase 'Afrika Korps' is
clearly German."
Which would then prompt an email from
Danni Cobble, aged nine, of Barne Barton
Primary: "Mr Pedant is wrong. 'German'
is an adjective because it describes the
noun, 'Afrika Korps'."
You see? We commentators could go on
for weeks.
Unfortunately, there have been very few
running stories.
The Americans haven't invaded anywhere
for a while and the UK General Election
won't be until at least May.
What more can be said about the
tsunami? (I tried that once and got my
wrists slapped; contrary to popular belief,
it is fine to insult somebody's religion and
politics – although you might think twice
about saying ya, boo sucks to the Peverell
branch of the Al Axa Martyrs' Brigade –
but never speak ill of a person's
charitable efforts or, worse still, their
pets.)
