Can anyone be a journalist these days?

Can just anyone be a journalist these days?

Modern technology, including the rise of the digital camera and self-publishing via the Internet, can open up the industry to almost anyone.

A panel of speakers is to debate whether the traditional role of journalists has been usurped by such newcomers.

The Fall and Fall of Journalism will be held at the London School of Economics on Monday, February 28.

The speakers will include blogger, journalist, publisher and broadcaster Leslie Bunder, blogger Suw Charman, Financial Times Magazine editor John Lloyd, and LSE chair in new media and the Internet, Prof Robin Mansell.

The debate will focus on the new phenomenon of citizen reporting, blogging and other new technology and new media enabled reporting.

Event chair Angel Brown said: "The debate will seek to expose an industry where the values of credibility and trust have been undermined not only by consolidation among news providers but also by a lack of respect for accuracy. With a perceived lack of concern for "getting it right", what will the new online information channels bring to the scene?"

The meeting will touch upon whether new techniques and the new breed of journalists make it easier or harder to report objectively, whether bloggers and the staggering flow of information will make issues of credibility irrelevant, and if we are in danger of losing the truth completely - no matter how good we are at Googling.
