Journalist Jane packs a punch

Getting into a fight with a boxer might not be an ideal sitution, but for journalist Jane Picken it was the way to get the inside story on the popularity of the sport among women.

The Newcastle Evening Chronicle reporter stepped into the ring with up-and-coming boxer Ann Ridley who, along with coach Billy Armstrong, volunteered to show her a few moves.

But after last getting into a fight at the age of ten - in the school playground - how would she fair against a much bigger opponent?

Jane, (25), said: "I couldn't stop laughing. In the end the photographer had to remind me that I was meant to be fighting!"

"We weren't allowed to touch each other so there was no risk of me getting knocked out, but it was pretty tough - she was much taller than me.

"I underestimated how careful you have to be about where to have your arms so you don't lose your balance and stumble."

While Jane practised her punch, her new sparring partner explained the need for more women boxers, as she needs fights to make it to professional status.

But while Jane enjoyed her time in the ring, she wasn't sure if she was cut out for a second round.

Jane said: "It's harder than it looks, there are so many things to think about.

"But Ann said I did quite well - I just need to be more agressive!"
