Echo salutes football heroes

Exeter City's FA Cup clash with Manchester United has been making headlines across the country - nowhere more so than in Exeter itself, where the Express & Echo has dedicated more than 200 pages to the matches in the past two weeks.

The Conference team may have lost out to Man Utd on Wednesday, but the Echo's front-page the following morning declared they were all 'Still Heroes'.

Fifteen pages of post-match coverage was produced for an early-morning special edition which hit the streets at 5am.

Staff worked through the night to put together coverage which included reaction from players and fans, as well as an exclusive interview with Alex Ferguson and a full match report.

An extra 10,000 copes were printed, bringing the total to 40,000.

Editor Steve Hall said: "Early indications are very good. By 9am we had a number of outlets which had sold out."

The Echo produced 27 pages of coverage of the build-up to the replay, with messages of support from football teams across the world, and editor Steve estimates that the paper has produced more than 200 pages about the two ties over the past two weeks.

He said: "After the first tie sales of Monday's paper increased by 15 per cent.

"It's been fantastic and very little else has been talked about during the past couple of weeks. Tickets were changing hands on the black market for £300.

"We gave away a pair of tickets and had 3,000 calls - more than when we gave away £10,000 to celebrate our centenary last year."

"It's been great for the profile of the paper. We've been on ITN, Football Focus, Talksport radio, regional television and even South African radio and Swedish TV.

"We've been asked about how we have been covering it and how important it is to the city, which underscores how the paper is seen as the voice of the city.

"It's been quite bizarre at times."
