Telegraph print works fire

Staff were evacuated from the Derby Evening Telegraph headquarters on Saturday morning as fire broke out in the press hall.

That day's editions were unaffected but the late afternoon Sporting Green was pulled, and today's later editions were due to be printed at Stoke on Trent or Leicester as part of the company's contingency plans.

The first and county editions were printed in one run to save press time.

Other newspapers including the Nottingham Evening Post and regional editions of some nationals utilise the press, and these other commitments meant some printing had to be rearranged.

Assistant news editor James Powell said: "One of the presses is out of action but no one was hurt and there will be no difference to the readers."

The damage is expected to run into hundreds of thousands of pounds and take up to two months to put right.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 10am, spread from the ground to fourth floor of a colour printing press machine.

Although the fire was contained in one area, staff were evacuated because the building was smoke-logged.

Some 30 firefighters were called to tackle the emergency and they were there until about 1.30pm. Crews wore breathing apparatus and used thermal imaging cameras.

Assistant divisional fire officer Bob Hughes said: "The sprinkler system activated, which controlled the fire, and because of that, it enabled us to get into the foot of the fire and extinguish it well."

The cause of the blaze is believed to be a bearing which had overheated.
