Enquirer reaches century milestone

The Enquirer Series has published its 100th edition - and as a double celebration, its circulation has soared to 60,000.

Launched in November 2002, The Enquirer is the only independent, regional, weekly paper covering South Essex and East London.

And since the very first issue, it has strived to maintain a high standard of objective and unbiased reporting.

There are two editions of The Enquirer – one for South Essex and one for East London.

Editor Carol Driver said: "We have been delighted to see more and more people becoming regular Enquirer readers and our circulation is continuing to soar.

"Over the past 100 editions, the paper has gone from strength to strength and we are looking forward to that continuing in the next 100 editions."

For the 100th edition we asked Essex representatives for their opinion about the paper.

  • Marc Diggory, leading firefighter, Brentwood Bluewatch: "The Enquirer has always supported the Essex Fire Service throughout difficult political times in the last few years, and for that we thank them."

  • Angela Smith, Labour MP for Basildon and East Thurrock: "The Enquirer is good for news not just about your area but for news across the whole of Essex - and it’s free. I read it because I want to not because I have to."

  • Teddy Taylor, Tory MP for Rochford & Southend East: "The Enquirer is getting old like I am! The staff deserve a medal for observing problems in our areas which many politicians don’t know about. Everything is always presented in a balanced way which is how modern journalism should be."

  • David Baker brand manager & presenter at Classic Gold Breeze: "The Enquirer is a real breath of fresh air. From our publicity in the paper we’ve seen 11,000 new listeners and listening hours have trebled."

  • Richard Howitt, Labour MEP Eastern Region: "The Enquirer is crisp, accessible and clearly independent of mind. And it has reporters who have showed great daring in the service of their duties."

  • Andrew Rosindell, Tory MP for Romford: "Other papers are much more localised but with The Enquirer we get the opportunity to hear about news in Essex as well as East London. The journalism and the style are also excellent."

  • David Amess, Tory MP for Southend West: "The Enquirer’s network is second to none. It has a good balance between local news and politics, and it has first class reporters."

  • Cllr Roger Weaver, mayor of Southend: "It’s a privilege to be featured in this spread. The Enquirer is one of the best newsworthy papers in the South East. Other local papers could do well to take a page out of The Enquirer. I look forward to the next 100 editions."
