Southern Reporter chooses new editor

Susan Windram is to become the new editor of the Southern Reporter.

The 41-year-old, who is currently a features sub-editor at the Scotsman, said the chance to edit the Selkirk-based weekly was "too good an opportunity to pass by".

She said: "I'm really pleased. It's a great paper and I can't wait to get started."

Susan has worked for Scotsman Publications for the past 13 years, starting out as a trainee reporter on the Herald & Post in Edinburgh.

After working her way up the ranks she won her first editorship, as editor of the free weekly, before moving to the Evening News to work as a sub-editor.

Most recently she has worked for the Scotsman, in both news and features, and she is now ready to take on her next challenge - as editor of the Johnston Press-owned Southern Reporter, which is also her local paper.

The broadsheet title covers most of the Scottish Borders and currently has a circulation of around 18,500.

It was also named best weekly newspaper in Scotland in 2002 and 2003, and so Susan says it is unlikely that she will be making any big changes.

She said: "I live in the Borders and the Southern Reporter is the main paper in the area.

"There is a very experienced team in place and what's there already is very good.

"It's a sound paper but there is always room to improve things and hopefully anything that we do change will be for the better."

  • Susan succeeds Willie Mack, who resigned from the weekly broadsheet earlier this year after offensive captions were published in the paper.
