Fresh journalism talent invited to conference

The Guardian is to hold a conference for student journalists as part of its commitment to encourage fresh journalistic talent.

Delegates at The Guardian Student Media Conference will be aspiring journalists who work on student publications.

The conference will be held on Wednesday, November 10 in London and delegates can still apply to take part.

Guardian journalists, designers and editors will be there to answer delegates' questions and run seminars and workshops.

The day will begin with talks by Janine Gibson, the Guardian's editor-in-chief and its editor, Alan Rusbridger.

A string of seminars will start with an interviewing techniques master class held by reporter Tania Brannigan and feature writer Simon Hattenstone. It will provide delegates with tips on how to get the right answers by asking pertinent questions.

Ian Katz, editor of the Guardian's award-winning G2 supplement, will give the second seminar. It will give delegates advice about how to target audiences, as well as information about commissioning and team management.

The student journalists at the conference will receive the unique opportunity of hearing about the skills involved in investigative journalism first-hand from Nick Davies, a freelance investigative journalist.

Tips on how to get that first career break will be given by one of the youngest and most accomplished editors in the industry - Mark Frith, of Heat magazine.

An interactive multi-media session will give delegates the chance to experience the stress of a busy newsroom by following a story as it breaks.

And an interactive session about publication design held by two of the newspaper's designers and deputy art director Roger Brown will allow the attendees to discuss the design of their student publications.

The Guardian's policy editor and columnist, Jonathan Freedland, will give a seminar discussing the role of editorial and opinion in the media.

The final two seminars of the day will be a feature writing master class given by two of the Guardian's feature writers, and a seminar about reviewing reviews that will give delegates advice on how to be better critics.

The conference is a free event, and a complimentary buffet lunch will be provided.
