Editor Gledhill set for vice presidency role

Bath Chronicle editor David Gledhill is set to become the next vice president of the Society of Editors.

He will be unanimously nominated by the board at the AGM during next month's conference in Newcastle, and if the nomination is approved he will succeed Keith Sutton, who is set to take over as president from Neil Benson.

David (left) has been editor at the Bath Chronicle for ten years.

He began his career at the Spenborough Guardian in Cleckheaton before joining the neighbouring Dewsbury Reporter, and has also worked at the Bradford Telegraph & Argus and Swindon Evening Advertiser.

Cumbrian Newspapers Group editorial director Keith, the current vice president, is due to take over as president of the Society at the end of the annual conference, which takes place between October 17 and 19.

He began his career in journalism on a local newspaper in Surrey in 1962, moving to Fleet Street in 1966.

In a long career on national newspapers he worked in sport, news and features as sub and writer on newspapers including the Daily Mail and the Sun.

He was chief sub-editor (features) on the Daily Expres, features editor of the (London) Evening News, and launch editor of the short-lived national News on Sunday.

He also edited the North West Evening Mail in Barrow from 1987 to 1993 before taking over as editor of The Cumberland News and News & Star.

  • Pat Pilton, consultant editor at the Press Association, has been appointed treasurer of the Society. He has previously worked at the Sunday Sun in Newcastle and the South Wales Echo, and was night editor of the Daily Express and Today, deputy editor of the London Daily News and managing editor of Mirror Group Newspapers.
