Papers make swift changes as legend Clough dies

Evening newspapers got to work on special editions yesterday to mark the death of football legend Brian Clough.

Both the Derby Evening Telegraph and the Nottingham Evening Post ran late editions last night with new front page leads to mark the passing of a hero, after the news broke at around 2pm.

And in Middlesbrough, where Cloughie was a star striker, scoring 204 goals in 213 games, the news came through in time for the Evening Gazette's 'City' late edition - which comes off-stone at 3.45pm.

Editor Steve Dyson said the story was the splash, to be followed up today with reaction, news, comment and a picture special.

Both Derby County and Nottingham Forest won unprecedented success with Clough at the helm, Forest winning the European Cup in successive years.

The 69-year-old, who had suffered from liver problems over the past few years, passed away at Derby City Hospital, reportedly from stomach cancer.

The late edition of the Derby Evening Telegraph was available last night with more on the breaking news and a selection of tributes to Cloughie inside.

Today's edition included a full 20-page supplement on the man and his career.

A special edition of the Evening Post was on sale last night with three pages dedicated to Cloughie.

There was also a full 16-page supplement on the local hero and his career in today's Post.

And in Sunderland, where Brian scored 63 goals in 74 games, the Echo replaced its centre spread with coverage of the news.
