Archant sub takes on Great North Run for hospital cause

Archant Norfolk Weekly sub-editor Mel Smith is in training on the streets of Norwich for the Great North Run on September 26.

She will run the half marathon from Newcastle to South Shields to raise money for the Great Ormond Street Hospital children's charity.

It is a cause close to Mel's heart as her brother, Daniel, spent a couple of months at the hospital after he was born with paralysed vocal chords.

He had to have a tracheostomy for the first two years of his life, and although doctors at the time were unsure whether he would ever speak without it, he is now a healthy 23-year-old.

Mel (pictured) said: "I have never run a half marathon before, so I'm quite nervous about the whole thing.

"However, I have joined a running club and I've been training several times a week, so I'm hopeful that I'll make it all the way.

"I'm determined to do it because it is for such a good cause."

To sponsor Mel, or make a donation, call 01603 772411.
