A new book on the history of Bolton Wanderers - as seen through the pages of the Bolton Evening News - is to hit bookstores next month.
Former Evening News editor Les Gent's book Making Headlines will look at the football club's fortunes over the past 130 years
It will show how the Evening News has always been there - bringing readers match reports, stats and more, either in the main paper or in its sports editions, the Football Field, Green Final and the Buff.
Les said: "The Evening News was first published in 1867 and the football club was formed in 1874 and they have grown up together.
"They developed into the town's two great institutions, becoming an important part of people's lives."
As well as editing the Evening News for eight years, Les has also been a long-standing season ticket holder for the club, giving him more than a just professional interest.
He said: "In some senses, I've had a foot in both camps. I've enjoyed putting the book together and, I must admit, I've learned a lot myself.
"There are even things that happened in my time as editor of the Evening News that I had forgotten about."
Together with an account of the major events which have helped shape the club, Les has also dug out some amusing tales such as the time early on in the club's history when 'Rain Stopped Play'.
The book also tells the story of a club tour to Greece, where players discovered that - instead of tossing up before a match - the captains cracked two boiled eggs together and whoever's egg was less damaged chose ends.
Les said: "Stories like that alongside the reports of the major events make this a coffee table book which can be dipped into any time and one I'm sure will be on any fan's wish list."
