'Newsroom buzz' for editorial team at work on 6am special

The York Evening Press ran a 6am edition to bring readers early news of the capture of murder suspect Mark Hobson.

Reporters and photographers from the evening paper were the first on the scene following Hobson's dramatic arrest.

The Evening Press was alerted by a call to the newsroom from Robin Wilson, a shop owner who notified police of Hobson's whereabouts.

During the afternoon and evening, a 20-strong team of reporters, photographers, subs and a graphic artist put together a 6am edition of Monday's newspaper.

It included an eight-page tabloid pull-out charting events leading up to the arrest of the country's most wanted man.

The Evening Press - with banner headline 'We've got him' - was out on the streets with the nationals first thing. The newspaper's first edition normally prints at 11am.

Editor Kevin Booth said: "It was a tremendous effort from everyone concerned, from the moment we took the call that Hobson had been arrested right through to our early morning print.

"It took no time at all to assemble enough people to produce the paper.

"There was a real buzz around the newsroom and people got stuck in. The commitment and professionalism they showed was a credit to them all."

North Yorkshire had been the centre of a huge manhunt for several days after the murders of twin sisters and an elderly couple in their 80s.

The week-long investigation resulted in the arrest of the man wanted for questioning by detectives hunting the killer of Claire and Diane Sanderson, and pensioners James and Joan Britton.

The newspaper sales team also went into work on Sunday to organise a box-out involving an extra 12,500 copies, re-route van runs and organise billing.

Production staff from other areas of the paper were also on hand to ensure the papers weren't held up.
