Times staff get on their bikes for memorial charity ride

Staff at the Derbyshire Times were left saddle sore but happy after completing an 80-mile charity bike ride in honour of a workmate who died of cancer.

A team of 13 cyclists took to the road for the event in memory of Alan Peters, who died of a brain tumour. They raised more than £1,500 for cancer research.

Leading the team from Bolsover to Sutton-on-Sea was reporter Jon Cooper, property supervisor Robbie Hague, keyboard team leader Andy Nunn and keyboard operators Jeff Ellis, Alan Roberts and Kevin Bingham (pictured), who all completed the full 80-mile course.

  • And after setting off at 6.30am, they were also joined by a number of other friends and colleagues along the way who were waiting at various pit stops to do shorter distances.

Jon said: "We had a great day and everyone enjoyed themselves.

"There were no mechanical problems or punctures it was a straight run. The only mishap was when I went up the wrong road - but I managed to catch them up and we regrouped.

"We arrived at Sutton-on-Sea at about 3.30pm after lots of stops for refreshments and to pick other people up, and 13 of us all crossed the finish line together."

And on arrival they were greeted by a big turnout of friends and colleagues, including Alan's wife Pat.

Jon said: "We never expected so many people to be there and are grateful for all their support.

"The generosity from people really overwhelmed us and we're delighted with how much we've raised."
