A group of MPs have paid tribute to journalist Adam Trimingham, who is set to retire next month after 30 years at The Argus in Brighton.
Fourteen MPs have now signed an early day motion tabled by Labour MP David Lepper, which congratulates Adam on his "years of reporting on life in Sussex in a career marked by the highest standards of professional integrity".
It also praises the reporter's "ability to be controversial and thought-provoking" and wishes him a "long, happy and prosperous retirement".
Adam, (61), said of the parliamentary petition: "It was very nice and totally unexpected. I have known them for a long time and it's nice to know that they appreciate what I do."
Adam, who will retire on August 9, has been a reporter at The Argus for the past 30 years after starting his career on local newspapers in London in 1960. He also spent time working for the Brighton and Hove Herald and Connors news agency.
Orginally from London, Adam moved to Brighton in 1967 after discovering what a "wonderful place" it was on a day trip, and now lives near the sea where he takes daily dips.
During his time at The Argus, Adam has reported on political issues and has written the paper's opinion pieces for the past 25 years.
He has also written a weekly Sage of Sussex column since 1977.
Adam said: "The column can be about anything I want. It has changed a lot over the years as various editors have had different ideas, but I've always had the freedom to say what I like and at present it is very long and heavyweight.
"I love playing around with words and never look at a blank screen and think 'oh dear'. I can always fill it.
"I couldn't and wouldn't have done anything else. I love Brighton and to write about a place you love is a real privilege."
