Tributes paid to editor killed in climbing accident

Tributes have been paid to regional newspaper editor Trevor Walls, who fell to his death during a solo mountain hike.

Trevor, who had edited weekly newspaper The Glaswegian for almost two years, fell while climbing Buachaille Etive Mor in Glencoe.

The experienced climber, who was a member of the Daily Record Mountain Club, had embarked on the trip up the 3,350ft mountain to leave a surprise bottle of champagne for a friend the day before a planned club walk.

A search was launched for Trevor after he failed to return from the early-morning trek, and his body was found by Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team.

Colleague Denise West, advertising director at the Scottish Daily Record & Sunday Mail, said: "We are all shocked and saddened by Trevor's death.

"He will be greatly missed by all his friends and colleagues.

"Our thoughts are with his family at this time."

Trevor, (51), was an experienced journalist who began his career at the Evening Express in Aberdeen.

He later joined the Evening News in Edinburgh and had also worked on the Daily Express in Manchester.

Prior to becoming editor of The Glaswegian he spent eight years as deputy editor and editor of the Daily Record's supplements.

Mark Hollinshead, managing director of SDR & SM, is currently on holiday abroad and has been informed of Trevor's death.

  • Members of the Daily Record Mountain Club pressed ahead with their plan to climb the mountain where Trevor died, believing it is what he would have wanted.
