A well-travelled sub-editor at the Plymouth Herald, who has edited several newspapers during his career, has retired after six prize-winning years at the paper.

Friends and colleagues gave George Taylor a send off to remember with a fond farewell at the Herald's head office, presenting him with a personalised front page to mark his time there.

He joined the Herald in 1998, initially as a temporary employee, and has helped the evening paper scoop a number of national awards.

And George isn't planning to sit back and relax in his new-found spare time - he's ready to take on some public relations consultancy and continue to see his old colleagues with a bit of holiday relief work back at the Derriford HQ.

He is also planning trips to Australia and South Africa, as well as fit in some gardening work on his smallholding.

George began his career on newspapers as a trainee reporter in Scotland, before editing papers in Glasgow and then heading south to work for builders John Laing in their public relations office.

He moved on to two more pubic relations roles before moving to become editor of the Tavistock Times Group, fitting in a stint as PR manager for Safeway, again in London, before moving back to Devon to edit the Mid-Devon Advertiser Group.
