Star's own team of 'ringers' brings charity success

English rugby history (of sorts) was recreated when a Newsquest title assembled its own team to mark November's World Cup win down under.

Coach Clive Woodward would have been impressed with the Bucks Star's never-say-die attitude in Buckinghamshire.

Because for weeks the Star battled in vain to track down readers sharing the same surnames as the victorious English lions.

Steve Back - not the real one - from Stokenchurch was only to happy to save the team - securing more than £1,200 pledged by readers for equipment at Wycombe Hospital's children ward.

He said: "We don't get the Star in Stokenchurch. But when I read what it was about I was more than happy to help out. The money is going to a good cause."

The Star got off to a flyer after announcing its zany fundraising idea in November, but while pledges continued to fly in quicker than a Dawson pass, some names proved infuriatingly elusive.

After all, how many Lawrence Dallaglios can there be in Bucks?
