New editor for Lincolnshire weekly

Staff at the Market Rasen Mail have welcomed a new editor with the appointment of Jason Hippisley.

Previously a reporter on the Lincolnshire Echo, he succeeds Charles Ladbrook, who now edits the Mail's sister paper, the Louth Leader.

Jason, (30), began his journalism career in 1995 as a trainee reporter on the Isle of Wight County Press.

In 2000 he returned to Lincolnshire - where he hails from originally - to join the Echo, and during his four years there he worked as a political correspondent and then a district reporter based at the paper's Gainsborough office.

In his new role Jason is responsible for the weekly paid-for Market Rasen Mail, which currently has a circulation of around 5,000.

And although he is keen to make his mark on the paper, he says he won't be upsetting any of the paper's loyal readers with any controversial changes.

He said: "The paper has a good saturation rate and most people buy it and read it - but there is always room for improvement.

"The paper is the voice of the community and I think I will just be re-jigging a few things rather than making any drastic changes."

Jason is also having to adjust to a change - of pace - as he returns to weeklies, and he is hoping this will allow him to get closer to the community he is writing about.

He said: "It's strange to effectively only have one deadline a week. There is a less constant pressure which allows you to be more considered in what you are doing.

"As a political reporter I was quite deskbound and I am looking forward to getting out and meeting people, which is what I like about local journalism."

  • Away from the newsroom, Jason still plans to find time to indulge in his love of amateur dramatics.

He has appeared in several productions since becoming involved in theatre at university, and is currently rehearsing for his next show, Murder in the Cathedral.
