Writer at centre of dispute is appointed magazine editor

The journalist at the centre of a dispute between union members and management at the Yorkshire Post has been given a new role.

The redundancy of women's editor Jill Armstrong was announced as part of a review at the Leeds-based title, which editorial staff felt ran against promises on staff cuts made by editor Rachael Campey when she was appointed a year ago.

The National Union of Journalists staged a "no-confidence" vote in the editor - which no one at the union meeting voted against - and she later addressed all staff in a meeting to clear the air.

Jill has reportedly been appointed editor of a monthly magazine in the group, Absolute Leeds, a role she will combine with feature writing for the Post.

Following the redundancy notice, she was offered the chance to apply for other vacancies at the Johnston Press-owned paper but this failed to solve staff concerns.

Johnston Press chief executive Tim Bowdler had already voiced his own vote of confidence in the editor after the NUJ meeting, saying: "I am pleased with how things are going and that the Yorkshire Post is making real progress under the editorship of Rachael Campey."
