Thousands of readers have called the Wirral Globe's You the Jury phone poll after the paper revealed a boundary change bombshell.
The Globe was leaked a document which showed plans were in an advanced stage for a cross-Mersey move that would link the historic peninsula with Liverpool, creating a new parliamentary constituency.
For centuries, the Mersey has acted as a natural barrier between the two areas.
The Globe produced a special photo-montage of the famous Liverpool skyline bearing the headline Welcome To Wirral, reminding readers of the implications.
The Boundary Commission said the scheme is necessary to conform with national guidelines that state each Parliamentary constituency must have 69,000 voters.
And now nearly 2,500 readers have taken part in the paper's You the Jury poll - only 84 being in favour.
Editor Leigh Marles said: "We're delighted with the response. It shows the depth of feeling that exists about historical boundaries.
"The story was a good old-fashioned scoop that caught the other papers around here on the hop.
"The Commission says it will hold an inquiry if 100 electors object. I look forward to handing over our results."
