Daily Post readerscame up with the goods after it was asked to help identify locations and subjects in pictures from the archive of legendary Liverpool photographer Edward Chambré Hardman.
The newspaper earlier led the fight to restore his former studio-home as a focal point for his work and as a new tourist attraction.
The house and 140,000-picture archive has been taken on by The National Trust.
And the paper's appeal to identify a mystery dozen pictures chosen for a city centre exhibition has resulted in a flood of interest from readers.
The Echo's Peter Elson said: "Having organised this Daily Post campaign from the start, even I was surprised at the scores of calls we received from the readers about the set of 12 photographs."
Information from the readers on many of the pictures has been pooled, but the National Trust curator remains "baffled" by some of the others.
