Weekly paper's journalists meet up for reunion

Former staff from the Falkirk Herald have been reunited at an event which raised more than £1,300 for charity.

Journalists, editors and publishers who had worked at the newspaper over the past 50 years met up for a reunion at the Inchrya Grange Hotel in Polmont.

They enjoyed catching up on old times, took part in an auction and raffle to raise money for Cancer Research and Strathcarron Hospice, and heard speeches from Falkirk Sheriff Albert Sheehan and MSP Dennis Canavan.

Among the guests were former Johnston Press chief executive Fred Johnston, former Herald editor Ken Waddell, former Johnston (Falkirk) Ltd managing director Grant Millard and Daily Record editor Bruce Waddell.

  • The event was organised by David McCarthy, Peter Samson, Julie Morrison and Marjory Kenny, who all worked at the Herald in the 1980s.

Marjory, who is now head of communications at the City of Edinburgh Council, said: "The event went extremely well.

"A few people who worked on the Herald have died recently and we thought we should all stop meeting at funerals and meet up at a nice happy occassion instead.

"It was such a success that we are planning to hold other events in the future. We had a really good time and I've been inundated with e-mails from people saying how much they enjoyed it.

"It took a lot of time and energy to organise and track people down but it was well worth it."
