Reunion plans for Herald journalists of the 1970s

A reunion of journalists who worked on the North London Weekly Herald series during the 1970s is to be held later this year.

Staff who worked on the titles, based in Tottenham, Wood Green, Edmonton and Enfield, will gather on Saturday, April 24, for the reunion in Southgate, North London.

The event is being organised by Mary Payne, editor of the NewsEXTRA in Winchester, who was a senior reporter on the Enfield Weekly Herald from 1974 to 1975.

She said: "The idea was sparked off by a chance meeting with an old colleague at an editors' conference.

"I've kept in touch with a few people and we thought it might be nice to try and find a few more.

"The paper was almost like a family, it was such a nice place to work and we were friends as well as colleagues. It was one of the best places I've ever worked and it will be nice to catch up."

So far Mary has been contacting people by word of mouth, and it looks as though there will be a good turn out on the day - but there are a few people who she is finding more difficult to track down.

These include Maureen Allen, Sandra Pearson, Chris Johnson, Duncan Garrett, Bob O'Boyle, Priscilla Harris, Pauline Loong, Denise Murphy, Jo Tsouvani, Cathy Meehan, Brian Haran, Tony Collier, John Fennelly and Steve Mackie.

Mary said: "These are names that keep coming back to me, that people say 'oh, have you spoken to so-and-so'. I worked with some of them and others I don't know but colleagues worked with them after I had left."

Mary would also be delighted to hear from any other ex-Herald staff of the 1970s who would be interested in attending the reunion.
