Long-serving former sports editor has died

The funeral has taken place of a former long-serving sports editor of the Hull Daily Mail.

Brian Taylor died, aged 73, during the Christmas break after a short illness.

He will be best remembered for his coverage of Hull City for 20 years from 1955.

He covered one of the finest periods of the club's history, in the 1965-66 season, when the Tigers lifted the Third Division title and reached the sixth round of the FA Cup, losing out to Chelsea only after a replay.

He became sports editor in 1975 and then moved into features in 1982, writing under the John Humber pseudonym.

After retirement in 1991, he could often be seen passing his time on the fairways of his local golf club.

Hull City legend Ken Wagstaff said: "He was a good reporter. He spoke the truth about how we played. He was always fair and usually got it right. He was just a nice bloke and this is very sad news."
