Colleagues have paid tribute to a former Slough Express journalist who died over the Christmas period after a short illness.

"Gentleman" Jim Stewart, who was 95, worked as chief reporter and news editor at the Express in the 1960s and 70s, returning frequently as a relief sub-editor well into his retirement years.

Taff Jones, former assistant editor (news) said: "Jim Stewart was a journalist of the old school who commanded the utmost respect of all reporters and sub-editors who worked under him."

Former publisher Jack Reader said: "He had a wonderful flair for journalism. He was a dedicated newspaperman with a feel for the community and will be sadly missed."

Colleague Alison Haymonds said: "I knew Jim for 40 years and I never heard him say a bad word about anyone. He was a gentleman in both meanings of the word."
