National Union of Journalists general secretary Jeremy Dear has awarded the union's first 'Scrooge Award for Corporate Greed' to Newsquest chief executive Paul Davidson.
He delivered a bag of chocolate gold coins, a copy of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and a Scrooge Award certificate to Newsquest's Surrey HQ. The award was for the company's record in delivering millions of pounds in profit "whilst continuing to pay their journalists poverty wages", the citation said.


Trainees who attended NCE Refresher Courses run by Cleland Thom Journalism Training Services achieved a 91 per cent pass rate in results just announced by the NCTJ.
This compared with a national pass rate of 43 per cent. Of the 12 trainees on the refresher course for the October exams, 11 passed.

The finance director at Gloucestershire Media is to take on the additional role of managing director of The Forester newspaper, reflecting the growing importance of the Forest of Dean weekly.


The PPA Magazines 2004 Awards for Editorial and Publishing Excellence will offer 22 different categories for awarding prizes on May 5.
The closing date for the Periodical Publishers' Association-run awards is January 22.
