Jemma faces her fear

Reporter Jemma Pearce is currently gaining first-hand knowledge of a range of new experiences for her regular feature 'Challenge Jem'.

In her latest task, the Bucks Free Press writer faced her fear of flying with a helicopter lesson - and even managed to take to the controls to land and take off.

She said: "This was to be my most psychologically testing challenge to date, as I can't help thinking that heavy vehicles made of metal just aren't meant to linger in the sky."

And her first impressions were not good, as she compared the helicopter to a "bubble-like, exaggerated toy".

But she was comforted by the dual controls which meant that if she did do anything stupid her instructor, Alex Hoff, could take over.

And after being briefed on the commands and dials on the pilot's control panels, it was time to start up the engine.

Gemma said: "I was first treated to a ride above Booker as an excited passenger, so I could experience the thrill of a helicopter flight - and the stomach-churning sensation of an emergency landing.

"Then it was my turn to take to the controls, complete with sweaty palms and a feeling of anxious trepidation.

"The various levers and pedals were not at all heavy to handle, and I found the vehicle incredibly responsive.

"I needed to concentrate very hard to keep the helicopter hovering, but managed to successfully land and take off after just a 30 minute lesson."
