'Work to hours' protest planned at Post

Journalists at the Birmingham Post are set to begin a "work to hours" protest against redundancies planned at the title.

Nine posts are under threat in a restructure which is part of the 500 job cuts nationwide announced by parent company Trinity Mirror.

As part of the changes several vacant roles will not be filled.

The National Union of Journalists chapel has voted to take action against Trinity Mirror and the work to hours was agreed as the way forward

The chapel is also claiming the written support of 17 Midlands MPs in their fight.

The changes to the Post come at the same time as a cut in pagination, from 220 to 180 - a drop which will result in some of the targeted roles becoming surplus to the paper's needs.

A company spokeswoman said when the cuts were announced last month: "Nine editorial jobs will be made redundant. We will seek to achieve these through voluntary redundancy.

"They are part of a restructure and streamlining of the editorial department the aim of which is to increase performance and efficiency within the function. There is a need to rightsize in line with the paper's sales and revenue performance."

  • The union's Birmingham father of chapel, industrial correspondent Chris Morley, is understood to have been reprimanded for his role in co-ordinating the protests at his workplace.
