New challenge for O'Reilly

Peter O'Reilly has been appointed editor of the Bristol Observer.

He succeeds Simon Harding who is due to take up the post of executive production editor (features) at the Western Daily Press next month.

Previously associate editor of the Western Daily Press, Peter (pictured) has enjoyed a long and varied career in journalism working on newspapers all over the world.

The 59-year-old began his career on the Rochdale Observer and prior to his role at the Western Daily Press he had worked as news editor and deputy editor at the Western Gazette Series for 10 years.

Bristol United Press managing director Andrew Calvert said: "I am pleased that Peter has accepted an invitation to become the new editor of the Observer.

"Peter has for many years provided invaluable support to editors throughout the BUP group, and having held the fort at the Observer for the last few weeks, he has thoroughly deserved the opportunity to run his own show.

"We have ambitious plans for the development of the Observer and also see it as an important training ground for our young journalists.

"I wish Peter well in carrying out this vital role."

  • The Bristol Observer publishes four editions each week and is distributed free to 180,000 homes.
