Cancer claims life of former reporter

Former Surrey Comet reporter Pamela Fletcher Jones MBE has died.

She was 81 and had been suffering from cancer.

Pamela trained as a shorthand typist and a nurse and spent the war in the RAF and working as a naval nurse.

Later she began work as a journalist, writing for Empire News in the 1950s followed by newsreel journalism for the Rank organisation.

She then joined the Surrey Comet, becoming well-known for the human touch in her reporting, and still regularly contributed to the paper after her retirement in 1982.

Pamela was also a proud Jew, and published the book The Jews of Britain: A Thousand Years of History, an authoritative account of Jewish history in the British Isles since Roman times.

She is survived by Norman, her husband of more than 50 years.
