Twenty-two MPs have signed a House of Commons motion in memory of Yorkshire Post journalist Robert Mills.

Robert, who covered cricket and penned a Saturday sports column, suffered a heart attack at home, aged 51.

Selby MP John Grogan proposed the early Day Motion, which registered the MPs' deep regret at the sudden death of the "much-respected chief sports writer".

It continued: "This House expresses its sincere condolences to his widow Angela, his three children and to his colleagues at the Yorkshire Post and salutes his peerless writing style and his enormous contribution over the last two decades to the coverage of Yorkshire county cricket, Test cricket and of sport in general.

"It notes the warm tributes that have flooded in from the cricketing world, including from Fred Trueman and Dickie Bird; and agrees with the Yorkshire Post that life has lost one of its beacons."

Robert had also written a book, Field of Dreams, which chronicled the history of Headingley cricket ground, including all the Test matches to have been staged there from 1899 to England's two-day victory over the West-Indies in 2000.
